ChatGPT supports remote MCP servers through developer mode. Unlike the built-in apps, a custom connector can both read and take action, which gives you the full Eclectic tool catalogue.
The thing to settle before you start is the plan: developer mode is not available on the free account, and in Business or Enterprise workspaces an admin may need to allow it first. The rest is filling in a form, with no engineering work involved.
Plan availability
Custom MCP connectors are not on every plan. Check yours before you start.
| Plan | Custom MCP connectors |
|---|---|
| Free | Not available Developer mode is not enabled on the free account. |
| Plus and Pro | Available Each person turns on developer mode in their own settings, on ChatGPT web. |
| Business, Enterprise and Education | Available, admin controlled An admin may need to enable custom MCP connectors in workspace settings before members can create them. |
01
Check that your plan allows it
Custom connectors live behind developer mode, which is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education, always in ChatGPT on the web. It does not appear on the free account. If you work in a Business or Enterprise workspace, talk to your admin before you start: they may need to authorize custom MCP connectors before the option shows up for you.
02
Turn on developer mode
Open Settings and go to Security and login. Find Developer mode and switch it on. You will see a red ELEVATED RISK label: that is normal and shows for every connector, it is not a warning about Eclectic specifically. What it flags is that from then on ChatGPT can connect to servers OpenAI has not reviewed, so deciding which servers you trust is on you.
03
Open Plugins and create a new one
Go back to the Settings sidebar and open Plugins. You will see the ones you already have installed and a button to add your own. Choose to create a new plugin: a form titled New Plugin opens.
04
Fill in the form
Under Name, write Eclectic. The description and icon are optional, you can leave them empty. Under Connection keep the Server URL tab selected, not Tunnel, and paste the connector URL from this page. Under Authentication pick OAuth. Leave Advanced OAuth settings alone: ChatGPT discovers the configuration on its own once the URL is valid.
05
Accept the warning and create the connector
A notice appears saying custom MCP servers introduce risk, with a checkbox reading I understand and want to continue. Ticking it is required, the Create button stays disabled until you do. The notice is the same for any server that has not been through OpenAI's review. Tick the box and press Create.
06
Sign in and enable it in the chat
ChatGPT sends you to the Eclectic login to authorize access. Sign in with the account that has access to the right business and return to ChatGPT. From there, in any conversation, select Eclectic from the composer to make it available. The first time you use a tool that changes data, ChatGPT will ask you to confirm.
Connector URL
Use exactly this address when creating the connector.
https://api.eclecticlabs.com/api/integrations/mcp/eclectic/What you should see at the end
Eclectic shows up as a developer-mode app in the composer and you can enable it per conversation when you need it.
Recommendations
Developer mode works in ChatGPT on the web. The mobile and desktop apps can lag behind, so do the setup on a computer.
The risk warnings you will see at two different points are generic ChatGPT notices for any connector OpenAI has not reviewed. They do not indicate a problem with Eclectic.
If you are in a Business or Enterprise workspace and cannot see the developer mode option, you have not done anything wrong: your admin still needs to enable it.
Official client documentation
Menus change often in these apps. If something does not match what you see on screen, this is the authoritative source.
ChatGPTWith the connector on, ChatGPT can answer questions about your operation from real data instead of pasted context. That is the difference between describing your business in every prompt and simply asking about it.
If you are enabling this for a team, start with the workspace permission and then share this guide along with the connector URL.
